video_dumbo was a premier venue for international contemporary moving image in New York. Curated by Caspar Stracke and Gabriela Monroy. It is now an archive.
video_dumbo took place in Dumbo, Brooklyn (2005 - 2013) as an annual festival for international contemporary moving image, as well as a large scale exhibition, and a platform for multimedia live performance. It was presented in collaboration with Dumbo Art Center (DAC) until its final edition in 2013 in Chelsea, Manhattan, then also in collaboration with Eyebeam Center for Art + Technology.
video_dumbo presented well-established Venice Biennale, Documenta and Manifesta artists such as John Smith, Yang Zhenzhong, Christian Jankowski, and Basma Alsharif, next to prominent New York artists such as Ken Jacobs, Leslie Thornton, Abigail Child, Paul Chan, Kevin and Jennifer McCoy, Tony Conrad, Patty Chang, Shelly Silver and Sharon Hayes, amongst many others.
In its last year, video_dumbo set its own record by including 80 artists from 27 countries with works that came from such remote places as Chittagong, Bangladesh and Tarabulus, Lebanon. Highlights in that edition included eight installations under the exhibition title Re-Return to Sender. The exhibition considered the imagined consciousness of digital and electromagnetic moving image displays and projection apparatuses looking at themselves, with its inherent narcissistic qualities. It featured works by Steina and Woody Vasulka, Mendoza + Cuppetelli (US) , Chris Shen (US), Bram Snijders and Carolien Teunisse (NL), Christoph Meier (AUS) Pascual Sisto (US) Daniel Canogar (ES) Daniel Kötter (GER).
